Shangrila's Orang Utan Care Project is a care for nature project between Sharing-La Rasa Ria Resort and Sabah State Wildlife Department. Shangrila Rasa Ria Resort has set aside a 64-acre ecological space for this project. While they rehabilitate orang utan, you and others now have a chance to interact with orang utan for yourself. See an orang utan, take a picture and share with your family and friends directly via your social media accounts.

While in Shangrila's Orangutan Care Project, you will realize the orangutan rehabilitation centre is attached to the hotel. The place is not too busy and not too crowded. Shangrila's Orangutan Care Project opens up for public visit in two session. The first session is at 10.00 am while the second session is at 2.00pm in the evening.

You will get a chance to to watch baby Orangutans feed along with a bunch of gibbons that swoop in for the leftovers. You can record this experience with your camera, otherwise you will regret it. So, be prepared. Bring your camera!

Most of the orangutan babies Shangrila's Orang Utan Care Project have either lost their mother tragically or naturally and need help, thank god . Once they are nursed and cared for to a point that they can proceed to the Sepilok Rehibilitation Reserve in Sandakan (which is about 6 hours travel from Kota Kinabalu), they are transferred with no cages, chains or restraints. The rehabilitation centre staff these orangutan babies like a human, from rescue to release.

Most of orangutan babies are kept and cared here until they are about 6 years old. The ones we saw were only 2 and 3 years old, and so adorable. Visiting Shangrila's Orangutan Care Project is a personal learning experience for you, for friends and family members.

Our suggestion - if you are on budget and think twice on spending your money, don't take a tour and pay extra money, just go there by taxi and pay the entrance fee, it will be much cheaper. The taxi fare from Kota Kinabalu city centre to Shangrila's Orangutan Care Project is around 60 to 75 Malaysian Ringgit per trip. Yes, it is per trip. Does not matter if you want to go there alone or with somebody else, the taxi fare is still the same.

But if prefer to go to Shangrila's Orangutan Care Project with a dedicated tour guide, that is the best option because the tour operator company will you up from the hotel you are staying then brings you directly to there. You can stop along the way to buy some food and drinks or to take pictures in front of popular landmarks such as One Borneo.
